HTC Touch Diamond Phone – A Smasher

Unlike the original Touch, the Touch Diamond does away with the iPhone-ish look and takes on a more professional, smarter appearance. Curves have been minimalised and a glossy finish makes it quite a stunner. It is also a lot more compact than the original Touch.

Unlike most touch screen pocket PCs/smartphones, the Touch Diamond uses a resistive touch screen that improves input recognition and accommodates a larger database of language recognition packs. The 2.8” 480×640 TFT screen outputs 65k colours. The OS is Windows Mobile 6 and it runs on a Qualcomm processor clocked at 528MHz. The Touch Diamond has 256MB of internal flash memory dedicated to the OS which runs off an additional 192MB of DDR SDRAM from which another 64MB is allocated towards 3D functions while internal storage memory is 4GB.

The GUI is responsive and comparable to the iPhone GUI, while sporting smarter looking menus. A 900mAh battery is standard and HTC plans on upgrading the battery to 1350mAh to improve talk time and stand by times.

It has support for Wi-fi 802.11 b/g, EDGE, GPRS/GSM, 3G with HSDPA/HSUPA speeds, Bluetooth (A2DP v2.0) and mini USB. A 3.15MP autofocus camera is backed by a secondary VGA camera to assist in video conferencing.

Windows Mobile 6 provides enormous third-party application support and this is one of its major strengths. Apple, too, will release an SDK sometime later this year for the iPhone to improve software support.
