Symbian Acquired By Nokia

The Finland Mobile maker Nokia acquired 52% of Symbian for a whopping amount of $410 million. Nokia has plans to make symbian into an open source software platform to rival Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone OS X software. Symbian’s 1,000 developers will join Nokia as employees and Symbian itself will continue as a non-profit foundation responsible for marketing the OS.

“Symbian is already the leading platform for mobile devices. Through this acquisition and the establishment of symbian foundation, it will undisputedly be the most attractive platform for mobile innovation. This will drive the development of new and compelling well enabled applications to delight a new generation of consumers”, said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of Nokia.

Application developers will hopefully be able to help Symbian continue its mobile OS dominance as Symbian currently enjoys a favorable market share. Now, application developers will have two major open source operating systems to chose from when developing their mobile offerings.
